“King Ubu is a naive king.
As with the ‘King’s New Clothes’ he exposes himself for what he is.
Charming in art,
excruciating in reality.

King Ubu was a ‘theatre of the absurd’ play from 1896 by Alfred Jarry that inspired bad-boy art like Dadaism. He became a playful figure in Surrealism, & this proud visage beams a benign, naive hubris that is oddly attractive. Copper paint on the surface makes it visually dynamic, while the strong line projects confidence and strength.

Carved directly into layers of wet latex paint, these paintings look and feel like plaster yet are resilient. Follow the line like a rollercoaster, or see the whole as a form. Rotate them to how you like, and rename them often - interpretation is an art. These action paintings were developed in the heart of Manhattan in 2020 and are truly New York Abstract Expressionism. I suggest simple, contemporary framing with a wide, 3”-4” mat.
